I’m not what you would consider a hard-core developer. I like to develop and have written fairly significant amounts of code in Ruby and PHP over the years but tend to work with coding frameworks and CMS systems to minimize my need to create boring backend code. The current tools of the trade are Ruby(Rails, Padrino, Sinatra) for custom development, WordPress for most websites, and Expression Engine if the site needs more admin-side control or the client requires the system be a commercially supported CMS.
This is often called slicing and it’s an art form all it’s own. The quality of your code is extremely important. Without quality code under the hood your site will be more fragile which makes it prone to look broken on different computers and browsers, it will load slower which effects user experience and search engine rankings, and it will make any future updates or design refreshes more expensive. I pay an extreme amount of attention to making my code clean, intuitive and fast.
It’s one thing to be able to design and interface but can other designers build one? I’m not talking about handing you a set of HTML files either. I’m very experienced in working with developers side by side editing view code while they focus on models and controllers. I speek git, ruby, rails, js and php and I play well with developer types. Whatever you’re building it needs to be easy to use and attractive or you’ll receive push back on it. Give me a call. I may be a good fit for your team and project.
A CMS is a content management system and it’s most common use is to make a website easy to update. I have mind control over WordPress, Drupal and Expression Engine and can bend them to my will. 99% of site needs can be built using a CMS from simple tasks like editing text and images to more complex operations like a corporate extranet or a membership management system.
There are several e-commerce platforms so there is no point in reinventing the wheel. I am a Shopify Expert and also have experience developing online stores with WordPress, ZenCart, Magento, and others. Most e-commerce needs fit into one of two categories. Either there is a very small amount of products or a very large number of products. For small numbers of products I recommend saving you some money and using one of many PayPal solutions. For the larger I tend to lean toward Shopify but determine the needs of each project individually.
As noted above I’m not a hardcore developer but am very competent and for some projects my ability to design and develop saves customers some time and money. That being said I am extremely honest about my abilities and if your project stretches them I have several super-geek development friends I love to send work to so don’t fret. I’ll put you in good hands, and no I won’t take a cut, I’ll just refer you. That kind of stuff is all kinds of lame and gives the industry a bad name.
